“the performances as a whole achieve a rare degree of intensity’

The Brodsky Quartet’s latest CD release – the epic Shostakovich quartet cycle – was recorded live in the Muziekgebouw, Amsterdam earlier this year, and has been given a well-deserved 5-star review by BBC Music Magazine.

Over the years, the Brodsky Quartet have undertaken numerous performances of the complete cycles of quartets by Schubert, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Britten, Schoenberg, Zemlinsky, Webern and Bartok. It is, however, the complete Shostakovich cycle that has now become synonymous with their name.  First recorded 25 years ago for Teldec, the quartet wanted to re-record the cycle having spent so many years developing and perfecting their interpretation and performance of these great works. Paul Cassidy (viola) says ‘The experience of making this live recording has been indescribable. We have lived with these friends over forty years, and the feeling that each and every time we put bow to string, the sound, the inflection, the emotion we produced would remain, fixed forever, made for a highly pressured yet strangely exhilarating experience. We are eternally grateful and humbled by this miraculous gift, bestowed upon us by the beautiful human who went by the name of Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich.’

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of these recordings lies in the huge range of dynamics and timbres that are employed to project the somewhat bewildering sequence of emotions that emanate from Shostakovich’s musical argument’
