This month Ville Matvejeff appears at the Savonlinna Opera Festival to conduct the world premiere of a new opera, Castle in the Water. Written by the Finnish composer Aulis Sallinen the opera is based on a collection of poetry under the same name by Lassi Nummi and depicts the colourful history of Olavinlinna Castle and its surrounding region of Savo. Built on an island, the castle is the northernmost medieval stone fortress still standing and served as a safeguard for the region during the First and Second Russian-Swedish wars, during which time the city of Savonlinna was founded.
“A chronicle for speaker, four singers, orchestra and Olavinlinna” (Aulis Salinnen), the new opera is a commission by the Savonlinna Opera Festival to celebrate Finland’s centenary.
Joining Matvejeff on stage are singers Tiina-Maija Koskela, Tuija Knihtilä, Jussi Myllys and Tommi Hakala with the Savonlinna Opera Festival Orchestra.
