The Oregon Bach Festival draws to a close on 15 July when Artistic Director Matthew Halls conducts Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with the festival orchestra, chorus and soloists Nicole Cabell, Sarah Mesko, Nicholas Phan and Morgan Smith.

This year’s festival has seen Halls conduct a variety of repertoire. He presented a programme pairing two 20th century works of hope, reflection and reverence, John Tavener’s The Protecting Veil and Herbert Howells’ Requiem with Andrew Yee as cello soloist. As part of the festival’s [re]Discovery education series he deconstructed J.S. Bach’s St John Passion over the course of three lecture workshops, delving into its history and performance practice before giving a full performance with Charles Daniels as Evangelist. Halls also worked with this year’s young musicians of the Berwick Academy, leading a ‘sparkling’ performance of John Blow’s Venus & Adonis alongside works by Rebel and Lully.

Congratulations to all on another successful festival.
