The Jyväskylä Sinfonia’s 2017-18 season opens with chief conductor Ville Matvejeff conducting a typically eclectic programme. From Haydn’s Symphony No. 38 and Merikanto’s Cello Concerto No. 2 the programme, entitled ‘Echoes of Galanta’, also features a world premiere by Uljas Pulkkis – commissioned by the Finish Musicians’ Union – and the concert finale of Kodály’s Dances of Galánta. Matvejeff and the orchestra are joined by soprano Tiina-Maija Koskela and cellist Tuomas Lehto.
Further concerts in the Jyväskylä Autumn season see Matvejeff continue his cycle of Beethoven Piano Concerti with pianist Víkingur Ólafsson, conduct the world premiere of Fragilis by Kimmo Kuokkala and repertoire from Mendelssohn’s Elijah to Schreker’s Chamber Symphony.
