Today marks the release of a new disc featuring works by American contemporary composer Michael Hersch, including his Violin Concerto. It is performed here by violinist and dedicatee Patricia Kopatchinskaja, conductor Tito Muñoz and the International Contemporary Ensemble, the former two of which gave the world premiere of the concerto with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra in 2015. The recording, which is released on the New Focus label, is completed by Hersch’s end stages, performed by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.
As a proponent of new music, Tito is a particular advocate of the music of Michael Hersch and, among others, led the world premiere of his monodrama On the Threshold of Winter at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2014. Most recently he conducted the European premiere of the composer’s I hope we get a chance to visit soon with members of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra at Aldeburgh Festival, which was broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
