Danish conductor Christian Kluxen has been appointed Chief Conductor of the Arctic Philharmonic, starting in January 2019. Based well north of the Arctic Circle in Tromsø and Bodø, the Arctic Philharmonic has become one of Northern Norway’s most active and flourishing cultural institutions since its founding in 2009.

Christian is currently Music Director of the Victoria Symphony in Canada, a post he has held since September 2017. Speaking of his new appointment to the world’s northernmost orchestra, Christian says:

“Above all, I think we chose each other… These musicians play at an incredibly high level, which for many is inconceivable to find in a region like Northern Norway. I look forward not only to contributing to the Arctic Philharmonic, but also to learning a huge amount from the musicians…The musicians in this orchestra are top musicians and some of them guest the major orchestras around the world when they are not here”

The Arctic Philharmonic’s Programme Director, Catharina Roos Bilsbak, says:

“We are so much looking forward to starting our collaboration with conductor Christian Kluxen, who will take over the baton from Christian Lindberg… As we enter a new era with Christian Kluxen, a solid foundation has been laid in the orchestra and we have high expectations of continuing and developing further along with him. As far as the artistic profile of the orchestra is concerned, the audience can in the future expect to experience the Arctic Philharmonic with a new repertoire and exciting new collaborations”.

Earlier in his career, Christian held the post of Assistant Conductor at the Royal Scottish National Orchestra from 2010 to 2013, before becoming Dudamel Fellow of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the 14/15 season. He has conducted many significant orchestras across Europe, including the London Philharmonic, Gothenburg Symphony and Strasbourg Philharmonic, and in April made his Australasian debuts with the Auckland Philharmonia and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.

On the opera stage, Kluxen conducted an extensive and critically acclaimed tour of Madama Butterfly with Danish National Opera in 2016, followed by his Berlin debut conducting Die Zauberflöte at Komische Oper. In 2017, Kluxen led highly successful performances of Die Fledermaus with the Aarhus Symphony and Ariadne auf Naxos with Arctic Opera and Philharmonic.
