This year Welsh National Opera opens the 2018-19 season with a new production of Prokofiev’s War & Peace, based on the epic novel by Leo Tolstoy. Directed by WNO’s Artistic Director David Pountney, the production promises to reflect the grandeur of Russian society in the 1800s.
Under the baton of WNO Music Director Tomáš Hanus the War & Peace cast includes Mark le Brocq as Pierre Bezukhov, Jurgita Adamonytė as Helene, Simon Bailey as Kutuzo, and Gareth Dafydd Morris as Konovitsyn/Karatayev. Further cast members include Jonathan McGovern as Andrei, Lauren Michelle as Natasha and Adrian Dwyer as Anatole.
Jurgita Adamonytė re-joins WNO, having created the role of Melisande in Pountney’s 2015 production Pelléas et Mélisande and again in the production’s recent tour to Hong Kong, and also played Hänsel in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel in the same season. Mark Le Brocq and Simon Bailey were also seen last season in From the House of the Dead which transfers to the Janáček Brno Festival this autumn.
War & Peace opens at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff on September 15th, and will tour through to the end of November. More information can be found here.
