Belgian conductor Karel Deseure has been awarded the Schaunard Award in recognition of his opera work in the Netherlands in 2018. One of a shortlist of conductors nominated by opera critics and experts, Deseure was named the winner after being voted for by ‘Place de l’Opera’ readers.

In Autumn 2018, Deseure received critical acclaim conducting Orpha Phelan’s production of ‘A Quiet Place’ for Opera Zuid, which was Opera of the Year 2018. Earlier that year, he also conducted Waut Koeken’s production of ‘Un ballo in Maschera’ also for Opera Zuid, as well as ‘The Rape of Lucretia’ for the Dutch National Opera Academy.
