This Sunday Sinéad Campbell-Wallace performs the role of Helmwige in Wagner’s Die Walküre, the second opera in Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen. Conducted by Vladimir Jurowski, the opera forms part of the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Ring Cycle project, which sees the entire cycle performed over four seasons.
The cast includes Stuart Skelton as Siegmund, Markus Marquardt as Wotan, and Svetlana Sozdateleva as Brünnhilde. Sinéad sings one of the nine Valkyries, daughters of Wotan, who decide who should live and die on the battlefield in the mortal world. Those who are slain are brought to Valhalla, home of the gods, to guard and protect the immortals from those who seek to overthrow them.
Die Walküre will be semi-staged at the Royal Festival Hall, the LPO’s Southbank residence.
