The National Theatre in Prague has announced the appointment of Karl-Heinz Steffens as Music Director of The State Opera. He takes up the post in August 2019, and January 2020 will mark the re-opening of The State Opera following its reconstruction.  Future plans include new productions of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg directed by Keith Warner, Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre staged by Nigel Lowery and Szymanowski’s King Roger as well as revivals of Fidelio and Tosca.  This position reunites him with Per Boye Hansen, the recently appointed Artistic Director of the Prague National Theatre Opera and State Opera, after their work together in Oslo; he will be a key player in assisting Per Boye Hansen to realise his ambition to reposition the Prague Opera Houses in the “Champions League” of European opera companies.
