This week Contralto Jess Dandy heads to the Ryedale Festival to make her debut as Dido. Opening on Friday July 12th and conducted by Eamonn Dougan, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas will be performed in three medieval churches within the Ryedale district. Last season saw Jess appear as Micah in Handel’s Samson with the Dunedin Consort at the Händel-Festspiele Halle; next spring she appears as Eduige in Rodelinda on tour in Europe and the US with the Harry Bicket and English Concert.
In Ryedale later this month, Jess also joins clarinettist Julian Bliss and pianist and festival Artistic Director Christopher Glynn for a programme of works by Brahms and Clara Schumann. Also appearing at this year’s festival are Hazard Chase singers Joshua Owen Mills and Martin Hässler, and pianist Sholto Kynoch, who present an evening of Schubertian music with the vocal ensemble Schubert & Co.
