On 23 November, Masaaki Suzuki and Bach Collegium Japan performed their 20th anniversary concert at the Concert Hall of Tokyo Opera City, a long-time key supporter of the group.  With celebratory timpani and trumpet flourishes, the ensemble performed two secular cantatas by J.S.Bach:

Tönet, ihr Pauken!  Erschallen, Trompetten!  BWV 214
Zerreisset, zersprengt, zertrümmert die Gruft  BWV 205

Hazard Chase artist Joanne Lunn led the line-up of soloists, which also included Robin Blaze, Gerd Türk and Dominik Wörner.

To complete the festivities, Robert von Bahr of BIS Records was in Tokyo to present Masaaki Suzuki with the prestigious Diapason d’Or de L’Année 2010.  Having won the award twice already in 2003 and 2008, the ensemble’s recording of Bach Motets this year has been chosen by the critics of Diapason and broadcasters of the French radio channel France Musique as the best disc of choral music of the year and was hailed in the April issue of Diapason as a new reading of the works ‘transforming them, through supremely fine-drawn lines and a perfectly radiant energy, into glorious stained glass windows.’
