Following another highly successful tour of Australia, taking in concerts, collaborations and education work at the Australian National Academy of Music, Brisbane Powerhouse and Sydney Opera House, the Brodsky Quartet return to the UK for the launch of their new CD, Rhythm & Texture.
Released on Orchid Classics with Brodsky Records, the Ravel Quartet is the main work on the CD with a collection of short 20th century works finding inspiration in the similar sound-world of Latin-American and Hispanic rhythms and textures.
“It’s hard to understand the thematic connection linking the five composers featured here, but the Brodsky Quartet treats each according to their requirements: gently sentimental when dealing with Gershwin’s posthumous Lullaby, and fastidiously detailed when interpreting Mario Lavista’s Reflejos De La Noche, whose itchy tremors, sweeping glassandi and suspended motifs vividly evoke the insect chorus of Mexican nighttime. The most impressive piece here is the interpretation of Ravel’s String Quartet in F, where the alternations between the first movement’s languid pastorale and the spiky pizzicato of the second movement are superbly effected.”

Awarding 4 stars and CD of the week in La Scena Musicale, Norman Lebrecht adds that “all you want to do when the disc ends is play it again”.
On general release: Tuesday 31st August
