On Wednesday 6th March Masaaki Suzuki opened the New York Philharmonic’s Bach Variations Festival alongside singers from Bach Collegium Japan and Yale Schola, and soloists Scherezade Panthaki, Joelle Harvey, Lestyn Davies, Tyler Duncan and Nicholas Phan. This marked the debut of the Japanese conductor with the New York Philharmonic.

In this, and subsequent concerts on 7th, 8th and 9th March, Suzuki performs an inspired programme presenting Bach as seen through the prism of Mendelssohn. Opening with Bach’s motet ‘Singet dem Herrn ein Neues Lied’ and concluding with his Magnificat in D, the pieces encase the Mendelssohn’s early Magnificat in D (a New York Philharmonic premiere) and his incomplete ‘Christus’.
