Alexander Chaushian has enjoyed a varied and most distinguished career to date,  which has seen him performing worldwide as both a concerto soloist and recitalist. Originating from Armenia, Chaushian is currently Music Director of both the Yerevan Music Festival and  the International Pharos Chamber Music Festival in Cyprus.

Alexander Chaushian collaborates widely, working with artists such as Yuja Wang, Julia Fischer and Yevgeny Sudbin, and with orchestras including the Philharmonia, the Royal Philharmonic and Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.


Full Biography

The internationally acclaimed Armenian cellist Alexander Chaushian performs regularly at venues such as the Wigmore Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, Konzerthaus Vienna, Suntory Hall Japan, as well as Carnegie Hall in New York, and Symphony Hall in Boston.

Concerto appearances include concerts with Royal Philharmonic and Philharmonia Orchestras, the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Boston Pops. He works regularly with the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra and has most recently performed Khachaturian’s Concerto-Rhapsody with the orchestra under Vassily Sinaisky.

Recent recital and chamber music dates from the season include concerts at the Kammermusiksaal of the Berlin Philharmonie, Sala Verdi in Milan, Theatre de la Ville in Paris, Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, and performances in China and South Korea

Chaushian is the Artistic Director of both the International Pharos Chamber Music Festival in Cyprus and the Yerevan Music Festival in Armenia. He performs regularly at festivals throughout the world, both as a soloist and in chamber music projects.

He enjoys regular chamber music relationships with distinguished artists including Yuja Wang, Julia Fischer, Levon Chilingirian,  Diemut Poppen,  Emmanuel Pahud,Ashley Wass and he has also collaborated with Yehudi Menuhin. His regular chamber music partner is pianist Yevgeny Sudbin. He is also a member of the Tchaikovsky Trio with Pavel Vernikov and Konstantin Bogino.

Chaushian’s recordings include several highly acclaimed CDs for the BIS label in which he is partnered by Yevgeny Sudbin, and his recently released concerto CD with the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra – also on BIS – received rave reviews and was selected as ‘Album of the Week’ by The Independent, UK.

After initial studies in Armenia, Alexander Chaushian studied in the United Kingdom at the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London.  He then pursued advanced studies at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler, Berlin. From here, Chaushian went on to win numerous prestigious prizes, including the 12th International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, and the ARD Competition in Germany. As an alumnus of Young Concert Artists, New York, he has toured extensively in the USA.

Chaushian is Professor of Cello at the Royal College of Music.
