Gordon Gietz is one of the most promising tenors of his generation. His career is focused equally on operatic and concert repertoire, encompassing a wide range of musical styles.
Operatic highlights in the US and Canada have included his debut at the Metropolitan Opera, New York in Shostakovitch The Nose (Gergiev), Stingo in the US premiere of Nicholas Maw’s Sophie’s Choice and Chevalier de Danceny in Susa’s Dangerous Liaisons at the Washington National Opera, and the creation of the role of Camille Raquin in Tobias Picker’s Thérèse Raquin and La Rondine with The Dallas Opera, l’Opéra de Montréal and San Diego Opera. Further engagements include Arshak II for San Francisco Opera, Kudrjas in Kat'a Kabanova for Houston Grand Opera, Benedict in Béatrice et Bénédict, Dialogues des Carmelites and Idamante Idomeneo for Santa Fe Opera, Fritz La Grande Duchesse de Gerolstein and Alfredo La Traviata with Opera Company of Philadelphia, Ferrando Cosi fan tutte for Arizona Opera, Ottavio Don Giovanni for the Canadian Opera Company, Pinkerton Madama Butterfly for Opera Ontario and Heinrich in Tannhäuser with the Montreal Symphony and Kent Nagano.
European operatic engagements include A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Chevalier de la Force Dialogues des Carmelites at La Scala Milan, Stingo Sophie’s Choice for the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, Lysander A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Glyndebourne Festival, Ananda in Jonathan Harvey’s Wagner Dream and Tamino for De Nederlandse Opera, Amsterdam, Sam Polk Susannah, Steva Jenufa and Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk for Geneva Opera, Jenufa in Madrid, Chabrier’s Le Roi Malgré Lui and The Merry Widow for Opéra de Lyon and title role Les Contes d’Hoffmann for Nationale Reisoper. Other engagements include L’Heure Espagnole at the Edinburgh Festival, Die Fledermaus under the baton of Seiji Ozawa, and Yonas in Kaija Sariaaho’s Adriana Mater at the Barbican Centre, Duke in Rigoletto in Beijing, China and Vietnam, Bénédict with Yves Abel at New York’s Lincoln Center, Tamino Die Zauberflöte for Japan’s Hyogo Performing Arts Centre and Romeo Romeo et Juliette with the West Australian and South Australian Operas.
Concert engagements include Verdi’s Requiem with New Orleans Opera, Stravinsky’s Les Noces with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Esa-Pekka Salonen and Rossini’s Stabat Mater with the St. Louis Symphony and David Robertson. His concert experience also includes appearances with the New York Philharmonic (Masur), the Cleveland Orchestra (Slatkin), the Montreal Symphony (Dutoit), the Winnipeg Symphony (Tovey), San Francisco Symphony, and the Philadelphia Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle and Wolfgang Sawallisch. He has performed Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Houston Symphony (Eschenbach), City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (Oramo), Toronto Symphony (Saraste), Boston Symphony (Hans Graf), Vancouver Symphony, l’Orchestre Métropolitain and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Mr. Gietz has also performed with the Boston Baroque, Calgary Philharmonic, and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. He also made his London debut with John Eliot Gardiner in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 at the BBC Proms Concerts.
Recent engagements include Steva Jenufa for Teatro Real, Madrid, The Nose for the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Steuermann Der fliegende Holländer for Canadian Opera Company, Don Jose Carmen for Opéra de Lille, Gonsalve L’heure Espagnole at the Edinburgh International Festival and Kudrjas Kat’a Kabanova for La Monnaie, Brussels.
In the 2011-2012 season Gietz opens as the tenor soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Houston Symphony. Other engagements this season include Cavaradossi in Tosca with Opera Memphis, Roméo in Roméo et Juliette with Vancouver Opera, Narraboth in Salome with La Monnaie and Don José in Carmen with De Vlaamse Opera.
