Full Biography

The youngest-ever winner of the Windsor Festival International String Competition in 2017, seventeen-year-old American violinist Nathan Meltzer is rapidly attracting wide public notice through his mature musicianship, rich tone and exceptional technique. A protégé of Itzhak Perlman, he studies with Perlman and Li Lin at the Perlman Music Program and Juilliard Pre-College, where he is a Starling scholar. In the 2017/18 season, particular highlights include his debut with the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Windsor Festival to perform the Sibelius Violin Concerto under the baton of Michael Francis and a return to the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra. A keen chamber musician, Nathan also performs solo recitals in New York, London and at Walton Gardens in Ischia, Italy.  Appearing widely across North and South America, his previous engagements have included concerts with the Pittsburgh Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Adelphi, Bloomington, Muncie and Charlotte Civic orchestras, as well as the Orquesta Sinfónica Concepción in Chile.

Nathan began his music education in Vienna and joined the ‘Violin Virtuosi’ at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 2011 before entering Juilliard in 2014. He has been a member of New York’s Omega Ensemble since 2016 and has participated on NPR’s noted radio show, ‘From the Top’, most recently with Mark O’Connor. He has also performed alongside The Piano Guys at Carnegie Hall, Gilles Apap, David Chan, and Augustin Hadelich and participated in masterclasses and lessons with Joshua Bell, Pamela Frank, Vadim Gluzman and Jaime Laredo.

Nathan plays an 1844 Joannes Pressenda violin on generous loan from Juilliard.

Reviews

15 May, 2017 – Universidad de Concepción

“16-year-old North American violinist tackled the most arduous passages of Tchaikovsky’s concerto with an astonishing skill; but what probably impressed the most in the first two movements was the tenderness he evoked in the most lyrical passages. The final movement, with its Cossack-dance rhythm, was overwhelming and unleashed an ovation that—on Saturday, in the crowded UdeC Theater—was responded with an unusual encore: the cadenza from the wonderful Poème by Ernest Chausson. In short: an unforgettable reunion with Nathan Meltzer that allows us to predict for him the most brilliant career.”
