Tenor Peter Hoare is renowned for his versatility and his musicianship. Much admired by conductors and directors the world over, his extensive repertoire encompasses everything from the more mainstream repertoire to Desportes in Die Soldaten, Larry King in Anna Nicole and Sharikov in The Dog’s Heart.   He has worked with many eminent conductors including Sir Simon Rattle and Esa Peka Salonen and can be seen regularly at both Covent Garden and English National Opera, as well houses across Europe and the US.


Full Biography

Peter Hoare was born in Bradford and studied percussion at the Huddersfield School of Music. Following several years as a freelance percussionist Peter commenced his professional career as a singer in 1992, at Welsh National Opera, where his many roles have included Herod Salome and Mal in the world premiere of James MacMillan’s The Sacrifice.

In the UK he performs regularly at Covent Garden, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera and the Glyndebourne Festival, and recent appearances have included Raskatov’s A Dog’s Heart, Faust The Damnation of Faust, Gregor The Makropulos Case, Michel Julietta, Creon in Julian Anderson’s The Thebans and Hermann Queen of Spades (English National Opera), Dr Caius Falstaff, Mr Upfold Albert Herring (Glyndebourne Festival), Alwa Lulu, Laca Jenufa, Bacchus Ariadne auf Naxos (Welsh National Opera) and Basilio Le Nozze di Figaro, Monostatos Die Zauberflöte, Larry King Anna Nicole, Abbé Andrea Chenier, Falstaff Dr Caius and Fatty Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden).

International highlights include Arbace for the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle in Berlin, Lucerne, and at the Salzburg Festival, Desportes Die Soldaten in Calixto Bieito’s production for Opernhaus Zürich and in David Pountney’s production at the Ruhr Triennale, the New National Theatre, Tokyo and at the Lincoln Centre in New York; Shapkin From the House of the Dead at the Wiener Festwochen, the Holland Festival, the Aix en Provence Festival and at the Staatsoper in Berlin; Tikhon for Grand Théâtre de Genève; Sellem in The Rake’s Progress for Opéra de Lausanne and at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées; Bob Boles Peter Grimes at Teatro La Scala. He has also sung Luigi Nono’s Al gran sole carico d’amore for the Salzburg Festival and for the Staatsoper in Berlin, Shapkin From the House of the Dead and the Captain Wozzeck at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Alviano Die Gezeichneten in Palermo, Weinberg’s The Portrait at the Bregenz Festival and The Thebans in Bonn.

On the concert platform Peter has sung Das Lied von der Erde with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Daniel Harding and with the Royal Flemish Philharmonic conducted by Daniele Callegari, Tippett’s A Child of our Time with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Gerard Schwarz, Berlioz Romeo et Juliette with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, Janacek’s The Diary of One who Disappeared and Elliot Carter’s In sleep in thunder with Contrechamps in Geneva and at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the Bochumer Symphoniker, Verdi Requiem (RLPO), La Damnation de Faust and Beethoven Symphony No 9 with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra , Elgar’s Spirit of England at the Three Choirs Festival, The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny for the Edinburgh Festival, Mahler’s 8th Symphony with the Hallé and BBC Philharmonic Orchestra with Sir Mark Elder and Il Prigioniero with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Esa Pekka Salonen.

Peter has recorded Delius’ Song of the High Hills and Master of Ceremonies in Britten’s Gloriana conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras for Decca Records, Tichon Kat’a Kabanová with Carlo Rizzi, Bardolfo Falstaff with Sir Colin Davis for Chandos and Leonard Meryll Yeomen of the Guard with Sir Charles Mackerras and the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera for the Telarc label.

For the 2015/16 season appearances include Witch Hänsel und Gretel for De Nationale Opera, Amsterdam, Zinovy Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and Laca Jenufa for English National Opera, Normanno Lucia di Lammermoor Covent Garden and Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk Opéra de Lyon.
