Stephanie Marshall’s performance in the demanding title role of Poul Ruder’s The Handmaid’s Tale marked her out as one of the most interesting young mezzo-sopranos to emerge in recent years. She appeared in the British premiere of the opera, based on Margaret Atwood’s award winning novel, with the English National Opera. She then returned to her native Canada for her debut with the Canadian Opera Company when Phyllida Lloyd’s production was staged there.
Stephanie studied at McGill University, Montreal and at the Royal Academy of Music, London, where she was awarded The Queen’s Commendation for Excellence. She was also the winner of the 2001 Kathleen Ferrier Award.
Stephanie Marshall was a Company Principal with the English National Opera and her roles there include Annio La Clemenza di Tito, Cherubino The Marriage of Figaro, Tessa The Gondoliers, Wellgunde The Rhinegold and Twilight of the Gods, Proserpina Orfeo, Sonya War and Peace, Mercedes Carmen, and Offred The Handmaid’s Tale. She covered title roles Xerxes and Ariodante, Octavian Der Rosenkavalier, Sesto La Clemenza di Tito and The Messenger in Orfeo. Opera appearances elsewhere include L’Enfant in L’Enfant et les sortilèges, Meg Page in Falstaff, Nancy in Albert Herring and Dryade in Ariadne auf Naxos. Recent engagements include Kasturbai in Satyagraha by Glass for ENO and covering the title role in Maria Stuarda for Opera North.
In concert she has sung with the Hallé Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Britten Sinfonia and the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group for the BBC. She sang the role of Sidonie von Grasenabb in the world premiere performance of Gerald Barry’s The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, also recorded for CD with the RTE National Symphony Orchestra. Recent engagements include Holst’s Savitri at King’s Place, a 30th Anniversary Gala for Opera de Montreal and The Dream of Gerontius with the Hallé Orchestra.
As a recitalist Stephanie Marshall has performed with Christopher Glynn, Julius Drake, Anna Tilbrook and Michael McMahon. She has recorded recitals for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and made her Wigmore Hall debut in 2002.
Engagements in 2010/2011 include The Dream of Gerontius with the Hallé Orchestra, 2nd Esquire/3rd Flowermaiden in Parsifal for ENO, Erika in Samuel Barber’s Vanessa for Pacific Opera Victoria and a Michel van der Aa commission Spaces of Blank at Spitalfields with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
