Overview

As the first Chilean singer to join the Jette Parker Young Artist scheme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, young soprano Yaritza Véliz is currently in her second year of the programme. Roles at Covent Garden include Barbarina Le nozze di Figaro, Papagena Die Zauberflöte, Daniel Susanna, Jano Jenůfa and Voice from Heaven Don Carlo. Before joining the Jette Parker, guest appearances have included Clorinda La Cenerentola for Chile’s Teatro Municipal de Santiago, Pamina Die Zauberflöte for Teatro Municipal de Concepcíon and Musetta La Bohéme for Teatro Argentino de la Plata, and in 2016, Yaritza won first prize in the Women in Music Competition organized by the Chilean chapter of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC.

Full Biography

Chilean soprano Yaritza Véliz joined the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme in September 2018 and made her Royal Opera debut in the 2018/19 Season as Barbarina Le nozze di Figaro. In the 2019/20 Season she sings Papagena Die Zauberflöte, Daniel Susanna, Jano Jenůfa and Voice from Heaven Don Carlo.

Yaritza studied at the Universidad de Chile with contralto Carmen Luisa Letelier, supported by a scholarship from the Corporación de Amigos del Municipal de Santiago. She also attended the Castleton Artist Training Seminar in Virginia. Her operatic appearances include Zaida Il turco in Italia, Roggiero Tancredi, Zerlina Don Giovanni, Magdalena in the world première of Miguel Farías’ El Cristo del Elqui, Musetta La bohème, Jano Jenůfa and Clorinda La Cenerentola for Chile’s Teatro Municipal de Santiago, Pamina Die Zauberflöte for Teatro Municipal de Concepcíon, Musetta for Teatro Argentino de la Plata and Luigia Castragatti Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali for Teatro Municipal de Las Condes.

Yaritza has won the Women in Music Competition organized by the Chilean chapter of the National Museum of Women in the Arts (from Washington DC) and Third Prize in the Laguna Mágica International Opera Competition.

Looking further ahead Yaritza returns to Teatro Municipal de Santiago, Chile to make her debut as Maria in Bernstein’s West Side Storyand to sing Richard Strauss Four Last Songs and Mahler Symphony No. 4 with Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra.
