Faust makes debut with the Berlin Philharmonic

Isabelle Faust, "the ideal interpreter of Schumann’s Violin Concerto" (Tagesspiegel), has received great critical acclaim for her debut with the Berlin Phiharmonic: "Isabelle Faust ... made it clear what a great interpreter she is" (Berliner Morgenpost)

Last month, Isabelle Faust made her Berlin Philharmonic debut performing the Schumann Violin Concerto under Sakari Oramo. Her performance received stunning reviews from major publications including the Berliner Morgenpost, Tagesspiegel and Kulturradio:

“…Isabelle Faust is the ideal interpreter of Schumann’s Violin Concerto. The sound of her Sleeping Beauty Stradivarius elicits no mawkishness. At once both delicate and tart, she kindles a poetical resistance against destiny, like an inner agitation which never peters out. Faust is not concerned with fiery virtuosity; she follows the path of Schumann’s musical ghost. A moving winter’s journey...”  (Ulrich Amling, Tagesspiegel)

“…One has to be quite self-confident when making a debut with the Berlin Philharmonic playing the Schumann Violin Concerto.

Isabelle Faust stood up to the challenge, playing with fascinating technical supremacy. In her interpretation nothing was sugar-coated (or glossed over); if anything, through the particularly slow tempi the music often felt even more brittle and disintegrated. Her presentation of the work is deeply internalized and any thought of bravura display vanished.

Isabelle Faust did not make Schumann’s violin concerto more accessible to the listener, but therefore reached deeply beneath the work’s surface. A high standard debut. One needs time to take it all in, but it will give one something to ponder for a long time to come…”  (Andreas Göbel, Kulturradio)

“…the first movement is complete in itself, and the way Isabelle Faust played the melody of the slow movement, as if she was praying, made it clear what a great interpreter she is – and what a truly unique composer Schumann was...” (Klaus Geitel, Berliner Morgenpost)
