Karl-Heinz Steffens joins Hazard Chase
Formerly Principal Clarinet of the Berlin Philharmonic, Karl-Heinz Steffens relinquished his post there in 2007 to devote himself to conducting. Frederik Hansen, the renowned Berlin critic of the ‘Tagesspiegel’ wrote that “The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra has lost one of its most significant instrumentalists – but the music world has gained a Maestro burning for action.”
Karl-Heinz Steffens holds two positions: General Music Director of the Staatskapelle and Opera Halle and Music Director of the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz. His career so far includes engagements with orchestras such as the Bamberg Symphony, the Radio Symphony Orchestras of Berlin (RSB), Cologne (WDR), Frankfurt (HR) and Leipzig (MDR), Dresden Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic and Düsseldorf Symphony.
In the field of opera, alongside his productions in Halle, he was invited in 2008 by Daniel Barenboim to conduct Fidelio at the Berlin Staatsoper Unter den Linden resulting in re-invitations for Tosca in 2009/10 and La Traviata in 2010/11. He embarks upon a Ring Cycle with Das Rheingold this season in Halle and Ludwigshafen, which will culminate in performances of the complete cycle in spring 2013.
