An Evening of Gilbert & Sullivan
An Evening of Gilbert & Sullivan
Here’s a How-De-Do!
An Evening of Gilbert & Sullivan is the most recent programming innovation from London based West End International. Gilbert & Sullivan represent all that it meant to be British during the 19th century; Gilbert’s biting satirical words allowed audiences to laugh at themselves (a very British trait) whilst Sullivan’s brilliant music perfectly captured the decency and manners the Empire purported to stand for. The popularity of Gilbert and Sullivan has never waned, but performances have tended to suffer from years of indulgence and a lack of attention to musical detail. Here we get back to the very essence of Gilbert and Sullivan.
Using the original orchestrations, British conductor Martin Yates leads four principal young British opera singers and an actor experienced in the demanding comedy repertoire of the Victorian age. Artists are costumed with linking dialogue to create a semi-staged concert, thereby allowing the spirit of this most extraordinary era of history to be recaptured in music.
The Mikado, H.M.S.Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, Iolanthe, The Yeoman of the Guard, The Gondoliers, Trial by Jury and Patience are some of the most popular Operettas in the English speaking world; this concert contains songs and orchestral music from them all.
The company from West End International will include conductor Martin Yates and five artists (soprano, mezzo soprano, tenor, baritone, comic baritone). All musical parts and scores, and costumes, are provided. The promoter provides orchestra and chorus (SATB – four voices to a part recommended but can be discussed).
